BURRA S.A.
We stopped at a small town called Burra yesterday as it was very warm and we knew the Showgrounds there would have power...( for the air-con ...we don’t need power for anything else 😉)
Burra is a pastoral centre and historic town that lies in the Bald Hills Range, part of the Mount Lofty Ranges....and on Burra Creek..
It’s known as the Merino Sheep capital of the world! 🐑🐑
It started as a single copper mining township....known as The Burra mine with miners migrating from Cornwall, Wales, Scotland & Germany.
Visitor info place where you get a key, and that key will open up lots of different displays around the town, so you can view them at your leisure and take the key back whenever you want for your deposit back.
We opted out of that as we had already done the “tourist train ride” back at Moonta. But I thought it was a good idea....rather than listen to someone rabbit on ....you look yourself ....it can be a bit embarrassing when you’re the only one on the tour!
As it was so hot yesterday...we decided a walk around the town after dinner would be better as it had cooled down...
Just another one of my favourites...love these homes...
The local School which was really very impressive....so big I couldn’t get it all in the photo...
This is another shot of the tourist info place and found out that the Aussie movie
Breaker Morant filmed in 1980, was filmed in Burra as it became part of the South African landscape in the movie.
These next shots are from the Lookout...and you can see how dry the place is
“Until we get our winter rains” ...I was told!
And one of the mine shaft from the lookout
We then went to the old train station...that used to run from Burra to Broken Hill and also to Perth....they have done a great job restoring it...but unfortunately .... “due to unforeseen circumstances...will not be open today” 🤷♀️
But it looked nice...
That carriage in the distance is being done up as a restaurant..
You can also book the “porters room” as a bed & breakfast.
Oh and this was an underground brewery...
The air vents......the caretaker here at the Showgrounds ( who has the best dog that talks to you...and stands on your toes so you don’t walk away before you give her a pat...looks exactly like a dingo)...what was I saying...
Oh yep...the caretaker said that he could never understand why all these miners that worked underground all day.....would want to build an underground brewery?? Strange lot! 🍻🍺 maybe hiding from the missus!
So that’s another town we’ve picked the bones out of and learnt some history about. Tomorrow we are off....not sure where....at least this tiny little town of Burra could supply us with everything needed to stock up our cupboards, fridges...and ...the chemist was obliging with medications....country towns are the best!!! We only bought what was needed! Thanks Burra!
