PORT VICTORIA
Said goodbye to Point Turton and headed back to the town of Minlaton. We needed to top up with fuel and do some food shopping before heading back up the Yorke Peninsula.
We had driven along the main road for about 30km and saw a sign that said Port Victoria....so always looking for a new place...we turned off and found this lovely little seaside village.
We found a nice spot to camp for the night...
Which we have all to ourselves....oh but we do have these for company...
Cute Llamas.....love them.....
We are also parked next to a bowls club that got Ed excited....but they were already in the middle of a game, so missed out :(
So we went for a walk instead.....
Port Victoria is on the west coast of the Yorke, with a pop of about 300. Like many of the towns in South Aus...this also has a jetty and used to be a thriving port for the export of grain to England!
It’s Anchorage is sheltered from the westerly winds by nearby Wardang Island.
The Windjammers carried the bagged grain to Falmouth, England.
The last working sailing ships visited in 1949....as a result, Port Victoria is known as the last of the windjammer ports.
Today it’s a town known for its fishing, and as we walked along the pier their were two ladies reeling in loads of garfish. The told us they were really good eating with soft bones.
They get loads of squid here too.
We found an old General Store...and bought an ice cream......( had to inject in to the local economy)
The story of the wharf told on the wall of the public toilets!
So Port Victoria was a lovely little find with such interesting history. My Dad would have loved all that...especially the sailing ships.
See it does pay to take a detour....you never know what you will find.
For you Dad XXXXXX
