BLACKALL QLD. Pt 2

Beyond the Black Stump….Back o’ Beyond, Middle of Nowhere and Woop Woop…are all names for an imaginary point beyond which the country is considered remote or uncivilised….a bit of Aussie slang….

The term “Black Stump” was used as land markers on a surveyors plan and was first referred to as a boundary marker in a NSW court case involving a land law dispute in 1831.

The “Black Stump” being used by surveyors.

Another very interesting place we can tick off our long list of things to see in Blackall.  ✅

Stay safe ❤️❤️

Just remembered……

Over the road opposite the Major Mitchell Memorial in the median strip on Shamrock Street, which is the centre of town, is this fossilised tree stump which was found on a local property.

The stump is a Conifer and is related to the Hoop Pines of today.
The wood has been preserved by silicification in which silica-rich fluids seep into the wood, and replace the original wood with silica.

No one is sure how old it is with estimates ranging from one million to 225 million years old!! 😳😳

No wonder it’s chained up. Crickey!!!!  Just amazing.

❤️❤️
