SURAT
PIOLeft Glenmorgan early this morning as it was a bit cooler. Had the air conditioner on all night as it was a very warm one.
Headed west to Surat, stopped in the town for a cuppa and a look around. Nice place but being Sunday it was very quiet so decided to keep going down south to St.George.
What a trip that was! It was about 80 klm of nothing.....except Emus....very big blue tongued lizards that are so big and fat they just take forever to cross the road.....hence a lot of splattered lizards.....snakes....of all descriptions......very pretty ones...but very dead ones thankfully...huge Eagles...very big, very long Goannas..they move quick! .....and Wallabies that wanted to race us across the road!
It kept us entertained.......then we had to pull off the toad to let some sort of machinery go through as it was just too wide for the both us and even though you can't really tell in the photo, it was very long
So arrived at St.George, and as we had heard it was nice, we intended to stay a couple of days, but we just had lunch here then moved on.
This is the Balonne River at St George. As you can see it's very muddy as they are also in a very bad drought.
All the water in this area we are travelling in at the moment is bore water which has been treated. The lady at the tourist information place asked if we wanted to fill up our tanks in the caravan...to which we politely declined. 😉 she said it was ok, but I would rather just drink bottled water at the moment. Gosh I am such a wuss....
We are now parked along side the Culgoa river which is just outside a place called Dirranbandi. We are with one other van....they asked if we were staying as they didn't want to camp alone as they hadn't camped like this before, so we said yes we would stay, and all was good.
The flies in the outback must number thousands to every person! 😳 I can understand why, as its cattle country and it is called 'the bush' but sometimes they are hard to cope with when they get up your nose and buzz in your ears.....fun times!
The best time in the bush is when the sun starts to go down. The flies disappear, the bush goes quiet, apart from the birds and it gets a bit cooler.
Off to Lightening Ridge in the morning......
