TOWNSVILLE

We have been here at Townsville for two days and have seen quite a bit of this town.

It has a population of over 174 thousand people, considered the unofficial capital of North Queensland.
We don’t really like big towns, but we had never stopped in here before, and being we wouldn’t come up this way again, we needed to see it.
The port of Townsville is being expanded to allow much larger cargo ships from Asia and the worlds largest passenger ships
It’s an important port as it’s so close to Asia.

Castle hill is the most prominent land mark so up we went today for a look
It was a perfect day and what a sight it was.

That’s looking toward the north towards our caravan park on the beachfront.

This one is looking out west towards the mountains. Poor Ed is not really good with heights.

This is another hill called Kissing Point where Australia & America were here defending us in WW11. There’s a fort there as well.

We walked along this small pier and found about 5 fisherman with a big haul of fish they caught along with this stingray.

Poor thing. But they can kill you with their barb on their tail.
Apparently they cut off the ‘wings or flaps’ and cook them to eat...not sure about that!!

This gorgeous piece of heritage was the
Queens Hotel and was built in 1906 as a lovely hotel back in the day. It was very upmarket with loads of servents and was situated right on the water front near customs house.
When the war broke out, Americans came over and used it as their mess.
Now it just used as office space which is such a shame.

So that’s about all for Townsville.

I was reading about the Japanese who conducted air raids in 1942 here.

Several 500 pound bombs were dropped in the harbour ... no lives were lost and structural damage was minimal, as the Japanese missed their intended target of the railway.
There was one thing they did destroy...
A palm tree!!!

No Japanese planes were shot down for it!!!
So funny.  No disrespect intended 😉

Off tomorrow!
