UNDERBOOL VICTORIA
We are back on the road again! It’s been a while so it’s great to be out there again travelling through different places.
We are heading over to South Australia towards the York Peninsula, where we haven’t been before, so really looking forward to this trip.
First stop.....Underbool.
It’s a small town in the Mallee region of north-west Victoria..between Ouyen and the border of South Aus.
It has a population of 217....and that was in 2006.....so I think a few have left since then. It services the grain farmers and the sheep farmers of the town.....but unfortunately the pub is no longer open and up for sale...if anyone’s interested?
Needs a bit of work....but a peek through the windows revealed the tables and chairs are still set up with beautiful plastic flowers ...although they are a bit dusty! But bonus!
Speaking of dust check out our caravan awning! It’s meant to be white like the van!
As you can see in the right hand corner....Ed has tried to scrub the red Mallee dust off....but it’s stuck like glue!! Not happy Jan! At least it came off the van!
So this is where we are parked up for the night.
There is power available to plug in to...but we don’t need it and we have plenty of water on board. There are lovely hot showers and clean flush toilets...plus it’s blowing a westerly gale, and as we are going west....no point travelling straight in to it.
There is another camp spot at the Underbool sports ground which is nice as well.
Lovely and green....there’s a footy oval, tennis courts, bowling club, etc..with power as well.
The next photos are what we came across on our walk around the “town”
Can you imagine being locked up in there over the summer where they get temps of 48c + ....
Not sure this is even used these days.....a lot of the lines are closed now. There used to be a train from Melbourne to Mildura ....”The Vinelander” that we all frequented quite a bit. It used to leave at night and go right through the night....12 hour trip!
The best part of the trip was it had a dining cart on it....shit it was a bloody slow trip. That’s no longer going....they have buses now! But it was an adventure!
Ed and I splurged out and booked a sleeper on the Vinelander once.....don’t know why we bothered as we never slept a wink...noisy old rattler it was.
They must have had it hard here in this scrub.
Tomorrow we should cross the border, and hopefully this wind will have eased.
Back go the clocks half an hour!
But....it helps to get away and lose yourself in travel...xxxxx
