(Temporary Backup) FINCH HATTON TO HOME HILL
Left our lovely spot at Finch and headed back towards the Bruce Highway.
We found a tourist information place and asked which way would be best to get back onto the highway, and were pointed in the right direction by a very helpful man.
The information place was Dame Nellie Melba’s house that had been restored, so there was a bit of her memorabilia as well.
Must say this highway has not been my favourite to travel on as it’s very busy with trucks and being the long weekend, all the holiday people going home.
But I’m one of those caravan people so I can’t whinge too loudly !!!
We did a few overnighters at truck stops and freecamps along the way. They are
always nice spots..
And this is Home Hill....
We counted 32 free loaders like us parked in our free camp
Street art
These are our spotlessly clean showers & camp kitchen
There’s also lots of watermelon growing here as well
Check out Ed !! So tiny between these huge statues of the cane cutters!!

Sugar cane burning

That’s the cane in the background as well.
We are now at Home Hill sitting in a great spot provided by the town with lovely hot showers and a camp kitchen. You are allowed here for 2 days which is enough for us, but many back packers have been here quite a while. They are waiting for the sugar cane harvest to start.
Last night you could see the burning off of the sugar cane. It helps the farmers to harvest the cane by burning off the leaves and stalks first.
It's quite a show and smells quite sweet.
I tried to take a photo last night but didn't do it justice.
The rest of the photos are just from our walk around the town this morning.
I think we’ve had enough of country for now..the beach is calling...
