WALLAROO
We have arrived at the beautiful seaside town of Wallaroo.
It is a port town on the western side of the York Peninsula, and one of the three Copper Triangle towns famed for their historic shared copper mining industry and know together as “Little Cornwall”, the other two being Moonta, where we have just come from, and Kadina, which is about 8km down the road.
Wallaroo has a population of about 4,000.
The name Wallaroo...comes from the Aboriginal word wadlu waru, meaning
“Wallaby urine” ...nice....
Early settlers tried to copy the Aboriginals by calling it Walla Waroo....but they found this too big to stamp on the wool bales, so shortened it to Wallaroo!!
Funny!
So we are now parked up at a lovely caravan park right on the water.....and because we are facing west....we get to experience these beautiful sunsets over the water!
We haven’t seen a sunset like this since Darwin!!
******sorry photo spam*** but couldn’t pick a favourite!!
The building in the background is grain storage....it’s a very busy port..
The jetty, which we can walk on, is huge and as you can imagine, very well used for the public to fish from!
Looking the other way..
You can take your car out on to the beach....and again, it’s such a long walk to the water....they only have one tide here a day!
And....you won’t believe this .......we are camped across the road from friends from Tweed Heads!
They have a permanent van in the Boyds Bay caravan park where we stay.
When we left the park last September to travel here..we were parked across the road from them there as well! Apparently they come here every year for about 3 months as the fishing is so good......must be......he has filled 3 fridges!!
Small world!!!
We are here for a couple of days....so a walk along the beach is much needed!
