YOUNG

Arrived in Young early this morning. It was a lovely morning, nice and crisp but not too cold.

Young has a population of around 7000 people and is another old gold mining town, with James White being the first European settler in the district & established Burrangong Station in 1826 with a squatting claim of 260 square klm.
It’s quite interesting reading about these old towns, as immigration bills and laws are not much different than they are today...
Gold was found...and then the Chinese miners came along and did a lot better...European miners resented this and hence many Chinese miners were attacked, robbed and killed.
The anti Chinese rebels rallied in numbers of up to 3000...eventually the rioters were controlled, Chinese had their claims restored, but...the New South Wales Parliament passed the Chinese Immigration Bill which restricted the number of Chinese that could be brought into NSW on any ship and imposed a tax per head on entry.....so really....nothing’s changed!!
Sorry .....I just find the history amazing in these small towns...

In 1889, Young was the first town in Australia to install electricity into the streets and homes of the township!

The first box of Cherries is auctioned off every year and last year the 5kg box was sold for $31 thousand dollars....which always goes to charity!

Beautiful Cherry Blossom....(that smells like pee...) ***lesson learnt...never smell Cherry Tree Blossom...yuk....just admire the flower from afar!!!

Town Hall & Young Railway Station

From Young we drove on to Junee which is another small country town.
It’s famous for its Railway Museum but more important for me is it’s scrumptious
Chocolate & Licorice Factory which is located in the restored Junee Flour Mill built in 1934 which produced 5.6 million bushels of flour per year, which in today’s dollars would be worth many tens of million of dollars.

These lucky people are coating the organic Licorice with organic Chocolate ....oh the smell.....

So now we have moved on to Wagga Wagga for a couple of days or so...see how we go.
