(Temporary Backup) JERICHO
Jericho is a rural village on the Capricorn highway in Central West with a population of 100.
It’s a lovely little town on the banks of the Jordan River south of Lake Galilee.
An interesting monument is The Crystal Trumpeters which was created by local historians to tell the story of how Joshua won the battle of Jericho. Go figure!
Once a month the smallest Drive-In in Australia shows a double feature.
It was built in 1969 on a small house block for the scattered residents around the district. It has the capacity to park 34 cars....and a further 32 people can sit in “The Bleachers” on either side of the projection room.
When it first opened in 1969....the first movie shown was the blockbuster
“The Sound Of Music”.... and back then....the town happily screened a show 2 to 3 times a week!
Main stream tv arrived in Jericho in 1977 so that meant everybody stayed home and now they only screen a movie once a month.
Unfortunately for the town, all the shops have closed down...except for the pub.
It’s such a shame, as this time of year, all the travellers are in town and would gladly spend some money as the town provide a great camp down by the river free of charge....and they open the local Showgrounds and provide us with power and lovely hot showers and water .... for a donation.
I suppose the shops can’t support themselves when the ‘travel season’ stops around September with only a population of 100.
It’s such a colourful, clean & well maintained village.
Those plaques were done by the local school kids.
The lizards having a yarn and a beer.
Lovely mural on the pub wall.
And to finish off...a lovely fig tree that just had to be photographed for its root system...
Nature at its best!
