RIFLE CREEK REST AREA
We left Cooktown caravan park very early this morning. It was going to be 40 klm hour winds and we were going to head right into it. Being that it was a long 300 klm drive, we thought it best to get off early.
You have to wait (very impatiently) for it to become light as there are lots of wildlife wandering about.
There are no fences along the road, so we had huge wild black boars, cows, horses and kangaroos to watch out for.
Being there’s road kill on the road, the big wedge tail eagles like a feed so you have to watch for them too as they take so long to take flight........ but apart from that.....it’s all good!! ;) we did see all of the above, except the Roos!
We didn’t have breakfast before we left, so about an hour into the drive we stopped at a very small country town, down a dirt road, and had breaky in the van.
Turns out I parked down the side of a pub/motel behind the hedges.
Ed likes to wander and I found a “different” outback signpost
They don’t go by mileage here, they go by how many beers the drive is :)
Headed off again and down the highway came upon a lookout of the mountains we had just driven through.
It was a lovely drive, but I was glad to get to Rifle Creek rest stop where we pulled up for lunch and are staying the night.
This is a free stop and at last count we are here with well over 50 other vehicles of different shapes and sizes.
It’s a big spot so we are not all cramped in.
We found a walkway through the bush to the small town about a kilometre away, but there was just a pub, two cafes and two petrol stops.
Tomorrow we are going to a caravan park for a couple of nights while we explore the area.
Looking forward to the next couple of days as we haven’t been here before so it’s all new.
Watch this space ;)
