TAILEM BEND
Tailem Bend is a lovely small town on the banks of the Murray River with a population of approx 1600 people.
The town was proclaimed in 1887, the year after the railway was opened.
We are staying at the local Showgrounds, with lovely hot showers and plenty of water. We got to watch the locals train for footy last night and the kids playing tennis, then by 9pm everyone left and there were just us 3 campers again.
We went into the tourist info centre, which is in the now converted train station, and the lady in there directed us down to the lovely Murray.....
The view from the top...
That’s the Ferry that goes back and forward all day and night for the people that live over the other side.
Cockatoos everywhere!
This old “Bush Hospital” is right next door to where we are staying.
And we also took a drive to Murray Bridge today. We needed shopping and here at Tailem Bend, although we’ve bought a few bits and pieces, we needed to stock up on meat, so the bigger supermarkets were all there.
We didn’t stay long, it was nice, but just another big town...(.20,000 people...and that’s too big for us)but we did stop before crossing “The Bridge” to take a photo.
Many, many, many moons ago.....that land you see was once part of the ocean!
It was renamed in 1924, deriving it’s name from the road (bridge on right)and railway (bridge on the left)...over The Murray River.
The city is on the Princess Highway, the main road transport link between Adelaide & Melbourne.
There’s dairy, pigs, chickens, cereal crops and vegetables, all farmed in the area.
So another lovely few days had.
XXXXX
