Amberley Air Base
Today we went for a drive out to to Rosewood which is a nice little town, about 18 klm away from where we are here at Marburg. We just stopped for fuel then continued on to The Amberley Air Base where I had read was open today to the public. Well when we got there, the queue was so long, we turned around and decided to drive in to Ipswich for lunch, then head back to Amberley to see if the queue was better....and it was!
Amberley is the Royal Australian Air Force Base, and is currently home to No 1 and No 6 Squadron that operate the F/A - 18 F Super Hornets
It's also home to Army units and is the largest operational base in the Air Force, employing over 5000 uniformed and civilian personnel.
The base became a major United States Army Air Forces base during 1942 and 1943.
It was really strict getting in there today. We had to stop the car, fill out a form, show ID, and definately no photos to be taken on the 2 klm trip from the gates to the museum. There were security people everywhere directing the cars to public only areas!
So great security!
Had to buy this doggy for my mum, he wanted to come home with me!
Couldn't really take too many photos, too many people around to get good photos. But it was a good day.
We are really close to the Amberley base here at Marburg, so you see lots of flight training going on, sometimes really low in the sky, and sometimes they are so loud, and it made me think about what it was like for our parents and the children that were in the War. I can not imagine the frightening scenes watching all those enemy air craft coming over, and woken at night to go down in the safety of the air raid shelters in the cold! Terrifying times. We are so lucky, and hopefully we will never have to experience any of that!
Till next time.......
